The state-owned electricity company, PT PLN, is guaranteeing that electricity supplies for Bali are adequate for the New Year festivities. The company’s general manager, Ida Bagus Mardawa Padangratha, said during a visit to Singaraja in Buleleng, north Bali, on Wednesday that there would be no interruption to the island’s electricity supply as a result of increased demand during the New Year holidays.
Padangratha said that the island’s overall power availability was 695 megawatts (MW), while the total peak load was 603 MW. Only about 200 MW of Bali’s electricity is supplied from Java, while the majority of the power comes from diesel-fired power plants located in Pesanggaran, Pemaron and Gilimanuk. Rocketing demand for electricity is expected to occur in southern Bali, where luxury hotels, villas and entertainment centers plan to hold New Year celebrations. The island’s electricity use is dominated by the business sector, especially tourism.
