The rupiah strengthened slightly against the US dollar Thursday morning as the markets received a mix of both positive and negative news. During interbank transactions in Jakarta Thursday morning, the rupiah strengthened four points to Rp 9,686 per US dollar from Rp 9,690.
“The rupiah currency rate tends to stablity due to the market response to the decline in Europe industrial production and positive signs from the Spanish bond auctions which raised € 5.83 billion, exceeding the initial target of €5.5 billion,” said Reza Priyambada, an analyst from Trust Securities in Jakarta, Thursday. The global market was is awaiting the outcome of the EU Summit.
Later this week EU members will discuss a financial bailout of Cyprus. “The market is awaiting with fear and hope the results of the Federal Open Market Committee meeting next week as they want to see the Fed’s direction for monetary policy,” he said as quoted by Antara news agency. An analyst from Milenium Danatama Sekuritas, Abidin, said that the strengthening of the rupiah was also die to Bank Indonesia policy to stabilize the rupiah. The flow of foreign funds into the Indonesian currency market is also caused the stability of rupiah. (ebf)
