0 Pondok Ranji station cleaned of illegal kiosks

The Pondok Ranji station operator demolished dozens of kiosks illegally built by vendors inside the station on Friday. "We need more space to accommodate commuters, as instructed in the 2011 Presidential Regulation that authorizes state-owned railway company PT KAI to revitalize the stations," station master Ariandi said.

He said that currently the station could accommodate 6,000 passengers each day, while the parking lots could only accommodate 300 motorcycles and 20 cars as most of the area was occupied by the makeshift kiosks. "After the demolition, the parking lot will be spacious enough to accommodate 600 motorcycles and 100 cars," he said.

Saidah, who used to sell soft drinks and snacks at the station, said that she could not file a complaint when her kiosk was bulldozed to the ground. "We are powerless ... We have been informed about the demolition for some time. I will have to move to another place, perhaps," she said. The train operator has set a target to increase capacity from the current 450,000 passengers per day to 1.2 million passengers per day for Greater Jakarta by 2018.
