The Corruption Eradication Commission has named Riau Governor Rusli Zainal as a suspect in a bribery case related to last year's National Games in Pekanbaru. "Our investigators have found convincing evidence and we have concluded in a corruption case the suspect is R.Z. and he is a governor," said Johan Budi, the spokesman of the corruption watchdog, known as the KPK, on Friday. Johan said the KPK had found at least two pieces of evidence to link Rusli with the alleged corruption.
The governor allegedly handed out Rp 1.8 billion ($187,000) worth of bribes to council members to approve several projects. Rusli has also been accused of personally receiving Rp 500 million in bribes from a manager of the state-owned construction company Adhi Karya, one of several companies that was awarded a contract to build facilities for the National Games (PON).
The Golkar Party politician previously said that he was only questioned to complete the dossiers in the cases of seven Riau councilors who had been named as suspects in the case. But the governor declined to elaborate further and said that his status was simply as a witness in the case in which his former subordinate, Lukman Abbas, had been named as a suspect.
The KPK has completed the dossiers of Adrian Ali of the National Mandate Party (PAN), Abu Bakar Siddik of the Golkar Party, Zulfan Heri of the Golkar Party, Syarif Hidayat of the United Development Party (PPP), Tengku Muazza of the Democratic Party, Mohammad Roem Zein of the PPP, and Turoechman Asy’ari of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P). The KPK has detained the seven suspects in three locations: the Cipinang penitentiary in East Jakarta, the detention facility in the basement of the KPK building in South Jakarta, and the Guntur military detention facility in South Jakarta.
