I write in reference to the article “Jokowi puts govt’s scheme on hold” published in The Jakarta Post on Jan. 17. I think the central government is underestimating the severity of the critical traffic situation on the roads of Jakarta. This kind of gridlock not only poses a grave vexation to commuters’ daily lives but also this everyday chaos causes the loss of precious time and energy for the workforce of the city, which always strives on the roads to reach their respective workplaces.
It is high time that the central government understands the misery of its people, prioritizes the need for the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system and cooperates with governor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in making the dream of the MRT into a reality. Jokowi’s offer of a 60-40 loan repayment plan (60 percent of loan to be repaid by central government and 40 percent of loan to repaid by the city) is worth accepting as it will prove to be a fruitful endeavor in terms of an improved quality and quantity of work produced by the workforce, which will no longer be struggling on the roads of Jakarta.
