Your comments on the performance of Jakarta Governor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, who marks his first 100 days in office on Jan. 22 amid the massive flooding that has hit the capital city: Give Jokowi some time: He has only been in office for 100 days. However, distributing supplies to flood victims is no achievement. Many organizations and private individuals are doing the same. The governor has urged those employed by the government to arrive for work on time and to do their jobs.
However, many civil servants are seldom seen in the office, as they have been busy with their own agendas that have nothing to do with their jobs. These people should be fired. Civil servants are infamous for not doing their duty. Discipline is a strange word for them. Jokowi’s first priority as governor after the flood ends should be educating the city’s civil servants. He has the bully pulpit of city hall to aid him. Jokowi should draw inspiration from Jakarta’s greatest mayor, Bang Ali Sadikin.
The governor should scrap plans to build a tunnel to mitigate floods. Jokowi cites a similar tunnel in Kuala Lumpur as an example, ignoring that the Malaysian capital is in the mountains and is seldom inundated. North Jakarta, on the other hand, is practically below sea level. Jokowi has no other option but to build a monorail and more elevated roads. To make Jakarta flood free, Jokowi should consult with the Dutch, who arguably have the best hydrological experts in the world, since 70 percent of the Netherlands lies under water. I lived in the Netherlands for more than six years, and never saw cities or roads inundated during heavy rain, despite near-constant inclement weather.

I fully support Jokowi’s focus on the safety of those affected by floods that culminated the governor’s first 100 days in office. The residents of Jakarta must support Jokowi however possible, given that there are 13 rivers in the city actively contributing to uncontrollable and unforgiving floods.

Jokowi should prioritize controlling the water that comes from Bogor and other areas. There must be a breakthrough taken to, at least, reduce the misery of flood victims. I think the government should build a dam like Jatiluhur to accommodate excessive water flow from Bogor. But, I know it will cost a huge amount of money, and involve West Java, Banten and Jakarta administrations. The question of where we could build such a dam also needs to be answered.

His best achievement thus far has been showing that he cares for Jakartans. Next, he should try and convince people that only through working together can we overcome problems like flooding and traffic jams.

Jokowi’s best achievement thus far has been helping the city recover from the massive floods. His next priority must be to help Jakarta as the whole.
