0 10 percent of Bali’s co-ops poorly managed

Bali’s Office of Cooperative, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) says that 10 percent of the island’s 4,407 cooperatives are in unhealthy financial straits or are poorly managed. Office head Dewa Nyoman Patra said in Denpasar on Friday that 90 percent of the total cooperative units were operating well, while only 10 percent were inactive or in trouble, which was less than the 25 percent inactive rate across the nation.

Patra said that the provincial administration was planning to issue new guidance requiring cooperative managers to undergo formal managerial training. “We will not issue any permit to establish a new cooperative before its staff undergoes a series of comprehensive managerial trainings,” he said. Bali cooperatives have more than 841,000 members.
