0 Denpasar Festival kicks off today

The Denpasar mayoralty is holding a four-day celebration called the Denpasar Festival to mark the year-end holiday along Jl. Gajah Mada from Dec. 28 through Dec. 31. Bearing the theme “Kreta Angga Wihita” or “My City is My Home”, Denpasar Festival was designed as a people’s party. I Wayan Gatra, head of the Denpasar Industry and Trade Office, said that around 6,000 city residents and artists were expected to take part in the festivities. “There will be a trade expo featuring 272 small- and medium-scale enterprises selling various products, ranging from traditional endek woven textiles, to food and beverages,” Gatra said.

He added that all products would be, “100 percent made in Indonesia”. “The exhibition is intended to encourage people to buy local products,” he said. The opening of the festival will be held on Friday afternoon at 5 p.m. Putu Budiasa, head of Denpasar Tourism Office, said the opening ceremony would be enlivened with a series of performances, such as Jegog Jazz, traditional and contemporary music and dances. Budiasa also said that local fa-shion designers and models would hold a parade entitled “Fashion on the Street,” presenting their latest fashion collections using traditional textiles, such as songket (cloth with lavish gold and silver thread woven in).

“The opening of the festival is a celebration of arts and culture,” Budiasa stated. Denpasar Mayor IB Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra had previously said that the city was focusing on developing community-based activities, young entrepreneurs and heritage locations. Jl. Gajah Mada and the surrounding streets have already been designated as city heritage sites. The area is also home to Museum Bali, Puputan public park, offices and an education complex. Lined with old-style shops, showcasing a blend of Chinese and Balinese architectural elements, Jl. Gajah Mada was once the city’s bustling business center.

Due to the busy festival itinerary, traffic is being rerouted on nearby streets. Head of the transportation agency’s operational section, I Ketut Sriawan, explained that traffic coming from the western part of Denpasar heading toward Jl. Gajah Mada would be rerouted to Jl. Sulawesi and Jl. Kartini. Traffic from the northern side would be directed to Jl. Veteran and Jl. Karna, while Jl. Udayana would be temporarily closed. Other streets, including Jl. Sumatra, Jl. Kaliasem, Jl. Veteran Utara and Jl. Surapati, would be designated for parking. Hundreds of police and pecalang (traditional security guards) would be ready to secure the area.
