0 Japanese student gets 6 months for marijuana

Japanese student Yoshioka Ryusei was sentenced Thursday to six months’ imprisonment after the panel of judges at the Denpasar District Court found him guilty of using marijuana. Presiding judge Gunawan Tri Budiono said that the 17-year-old student had consumed marijuana for one year. “He smokes marijuana three times a day, putting the marijuana inside the cigarette and inhaling it,” he said. The sentence was less than the 12 months’ imprisonment sought by prosecutor Wayan Widana.

The panel of judges cited several mitigating factors, including the fact that the defendant was still a minor, his polite attitude during the trial and his apparent remorse. The defendant had also promised the judges that he would not repeat the transgression again. Ryusei accepted the verdict while the prosecutor disclosed that he would review it before deciding whether to file an appeal. Ryusei was arrested in early August in front of a petrol station on Jl. Teuku Umar Barat. The officers found 2.61 grams of marijuana in the pocket of his pants.
