0 South Sumatra Top Cop Holding Job

Insp. Gen. Iskandar Hasan has not yet tendered his resignation as the South Sumatra Police chief, despite his intention to run in the gubernatorial election there. Insp. Gen. Prasetyo, the deputy chief of the National Police’s human resources division, said Iskandar remained an active police officer, barring him from engaging in any political activities. “There is no resignation letter yet. I have checked with the National Police chief and it’s still not in yet.

So that means he’s still the provincial police chief,” Prasetyo said in Jakarta over the weekend. According to Prasetyo, as a two-star general, Iskandar would need the approval of the National Police chief, Gen. Timur Pradopo, and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono before he could resign from the force to contest the June 6 election. “For generals, a direct approval from the president [is needed].

But we still haven’t received the letter so we can’t process it yet,” he added. Asked if the South Sumatra deputy police chief, Brig. Gen. Zulkarnain, would automatically replace Iskandar if he left the position, Prasetyo said otherwise. “It’s not like that. It has to go through the Wanjakti [Council for Positions and Higher Ranks] process,” he said.

Insp. Gen. Suhardi Alius, a National Police spokesman, previously said that Iskandar, who assumed the post of provincial police chief last December, would resign to compete in the gubernatorial election. Iskandar and his unofficial running mate, Hafisz Tohir, are backed by the National Mandate Party (PAN) and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) . The incumbent, Governor Alex Noerdin, is seeking re-election with the support of the Golkar Party and the Democratic Party.
