0 Police nab minimarket ATM bandit

Police say they have arrested a man who is allegedly part of a gang that have robbed four ATMs in minimarkets in Greater Jakarta since November last year. Jakarta Police Spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said on Friday that officers arrested Rahmat alias Jabrul, 44, in Bekasi, West Java, after canvassing the neighborhood around the robbed minimarkets.

"The suspect was involved in four robberies in Cimanggis and Kukusan Beji in Depok [West Java], in Menteng [Central Jakarta] and in Cakung [East Jakarta], taking away a total of Rp 600 million [around US$62,000]," he said. Rikwanto said the gang usually broke into the minimarkets using handspikes in the wee hours of the morning and made good their escape on motorcycles.

The robbers also deactivated the alarms in the minimarkets and used store trolleys to move the ATMS outside. Rahmat faces five years' imprisonment if convicted. Another four men sought by the police remain at large. Jakarta Police chief detective Adj. Sr. Comr. Herry Heryawan said all of the ATMs belonged to state-owned Bank Rakyat Indonesia, which. according to the suspect, were "easier to disassemble".
