Golkar Party chairman Aburizal Bakrie has instructed all party members to assist law enforcers in their fight against corruption after two of its politicians were accused of accepting bribes linked to a graft-tainted procurement project. “All members of [Golkar] must be willing to provide testimony that will help [law enforcers] to solve the case,” Aburizal said on Tuesday.
Golkar legislators Bambang Soesatyo and Aziz Syamsuddin have been accused by graft convict Muhammad Nazaruddin, formerly of the Democratic Party, of being involved in corruption in the procurement of driving simulators by the National Police’s traffic division. The tender for the project was allegedly rigged and its budget inflated from less than Rp 100 billion ($10.3 million) to Rp 196.8 billion. At least two police generals allegedly received kickbacks in exchange for helping to rig the tender.
During questioning by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) last week, Nazaruddin alleged that the case also involved three legislators, including Golkar’s Bambang and Aziz. The third, Nazaruddin said, was Herman Herry from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P). Bambang said on Monday that he was willing to be shot dead or spend a lifetime in jail if he was proven to be involved in the driving simulator scandal. “The allegation is not true.
I am willing to face not only prison but even a death squad if I really committed that despicable act, and I will not stop voicing the truth,” said Bambang, who is a member of the House of Representatives Commission III, which oversees legal affairs. Aziz also denied the allegation, arguing that although Commission III oversaw legal affairs, including matters related to the police, the procurement of equipment, such as the driving simulators, was not something that would have fallen under the House’s oversight.
