0 Joko Takes Leave to Help Campaign for Rieke in West Java

Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo has decided to take a few days off to help campaign for the party’s gubernatorial candidate pair for West Java. “I know that West Java people want changes,” Joko said on Saturday at Gambir train station before leaving to Bandung to campaign for the pair. “And for me, change must be start by a clean and honest leader. These [characters] can be seen in Rieke [Diah Pitaloka] and Teten [Masduki].”

Deputy Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama will take over Joko’s job while he takes leave to join the campaign of Rieke and her deputy candidate Teten, who will contest in the Feb. 24 gubernatorial election. Rieke, a former soap opera star turned lawmaker, said that she and her running mate Teten, an anticorruption activist, planned to bring good changes to the province. “As for me, there’s no way the development can run well without an honest and clean leader,” Rieke said.

Rieke and Teten will compete with four other candidates, including West Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan who is running actor Dede Mizwar from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS). The other candidates are former governor Dede Yusuf and Lex Laksmana from the Democratic Party, Irianto MS Syaifudin and Tatang Farhanul Hakim from the Golkar Party and independent candidates Dikdik Muliana Arief Mansyur and Cecep Nana Suryana Toyib. A recent survey conducted by the Strategic Development Study Center (Puskaptis) predicted that Ahmad would garner 31 percent of the votes in the poll followed by Dede Yusuf and then Rieke.
