The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle has predicted its candidate for West Java governor, Rieke Diah Pitaloka, will win the election in a single round, topping the ballot, and the 30 percent threshold needed to avoid a second-round vote. The party said it had taken soundings from its members in the area and concluded that Rieke and her deputy candidate Teten Masduki would poll somewhere between 20 percent and 63 percent in the Feb. 24 ballot.
“God willing, it [the win] will be in one round,” Tubagus Hasanuddin, the chairman of West Java regional chapter of the party known as PDI-P, told a media conference after a party meeting to support the candidates. The meeting was chaired by PDI-P chairwoman Megawati Sukarnoputri, but she did not attend the media conference. Tubagus said that PDI-P initially aimed to win in two rounds, but its optimism grew in line with increasing support for Rieke.
“The [support exceeded] our expectations since we declared Rieke-Teten as candidates in November 2012. We were set for two rounds. We made daily and weekly evaluations,” said Tubagus, who is also the chairman of House of Representatives Commission I, which oversees defense and foreign affairs. “Today we have made a detailed evaluation and it turned out it increased. We’re confident we could win.”
Idham Samawi, the party’s membership and recruitment chairman, said the coordination meeting was attended by 26 party officials, PDI-P-sponsored regional heads, and its legislators from the West Java Legislative Council. “PDI-P members from West Java were all present to achieve one goal, which is to help Rieke-Teten secure victory,” Idham said on Monday. Sidarto Danusubroto, the party’s ethics chairman, said the party would investigate its West Java members who did not take part in the efforts to help Rieke win the race.
“The chairwoman’s message to all PDI-P structures in West Java is that there will be an evaluation of those who didn’t go to the field to support Rieke-Teten’s bid. Those cadres will not be eligible to run as legislator candidates for PDI-P. This includes incumbent regional heads — they will not be nominated twice if they don’t help Rieke-Teten secure victory,” he said. Rieke’s biggest rival for the post is incumbent Governor Ahmad Heryawan, who, along with deputy candidate Dedi Mizwar, an actor, is endorsed by the religiously conservative Prosperous Justice Party (PKS).
Analysts have said Ahmad’s reelection bid will be hurt by the corruption scandal that last week prompted the party’s national president to resign. Last year, Ahmad was reported to the local election board for alleged campaign violations after the governor reportedly asked local village chiefs for their support and promised them Rp 100 million ($10,300) each if he was re-elected, a spokesman for PDI-P said late last year. Rieke, a former actress, has aligned herself with Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo, who was also backed by the PDI-P, adopting his trademark check shirt.
