The Association of Indonesian Tobacco Farmers and the National Coalition for Clove Cigarette Preservation expressed their strong opposition to a 2012 government regulation about tobacco, saying the regulation would badly affect farmers’ livelihoods. The coalition coordinator, A Zulvan Kurniawan, said on Thursday they would file a judicial review.
The regulation includes an article stipulating that tobacco farmers should turn to other crops when they do not receive orders from cigarette companies. “Farmers will be forced to look for new crops that are suitable to grow on a land where tobacco was planted. This is difficult and time consuming,” said the Bali chapter association chairman, Putu Oka. If the regulation is put into effect, it will affect the livelihoods of tobacco farmers.
