0 Kowani calls on House to reject Daming

The Indonesian Women’s Congress (Kowani) has called on the House of Representatives to dismiss Muhammad Daming Sunusi’s bid to become a Supreme Court justice after he made an insensitive comment on rape victims. During a fit-and-proper interview on Monday, Daming told lawmakers that “both the victim of rape and the rapist might have enjoyed their intercourse together, so we should think twice before handing down the death penalty.” The group said it was inappropriate for a judicial candidate to make such a remark.

“For this reason we suggest that the House should reject his candidacy,” Kowani said in a statement released on Thursday. Kowani claims connections to more than 80 women’s organizations, with a total of 30 million members nationwide. Previously, the National Commission on Child Protection (KPAI) called on Daming to be fired for the gaffe. It said that Daming should no longer be allowed to make judicial decisions that affected the lives of others.

“More people will suffer injustices if we have a judge like that,” KPAI member Muhammad Ihsan told lawmakers at a hearing of House of Representatives Commission III overseeing law and human rights.
