0 Choel Says He is Ready if Declared a Graft Suspect

The younger brother of former sports minister Andi Mallarangeng says he is prepared if the Corruption Eradication Commission names him a graft suspect during questioning on Friday. Choel Mallarengeng is a witness in the graft case of the Hambalang sports center project  — a case which his brother Andi has already been named a suspect. "I am ready to assume whatever risk there is," Choel said when arriving at the office of the corruption watchdog, known as KPK, for questioning on Friday.

Choel declined to comment on the accusations leveled against him, which includes the State Audit Agency (BPK) alleging his involvement in the corruption case which reportedly caused state losses of Rp 243.6 billion ($25 million). "As I have promised earlier, I will be really cooperative. I will tell whatever I went through and heard of," he explained. The KPK made waves last month when it named Andi a suspect in connection to the Rp 2.5 trillion project, the first time that a serving minister had ever been named a graft suspect.

Andi, from the Democratic Party, promptly resigned from the cabinet after the claims. Choel has in the past admitted to having knowledge about one of the subcontractors for the project, Herman Prananto, the director of Global Daya Manunggal, but he has denied that he received Rp 2 billion in bribes from the company. He also allegedly received money from the Hambalang project's main contractor, state-controlled construction firm Adhi Karya. High-profile graft convict Muhammad Nazaruddin also claimed that Choel received money from Adhi Karya through Mahfud Suroso, the director of Dutasari Citralaras, another subcontractor. Andi and Choel have both been prohibited from traveling abroad.
