0 BBB to screen Alfred Hitchcock movies

Bentara Budaya Bali (BBB) will play selected movies by Alfred Hitchcock this Friday and Saturday at Jl. Prof. Ida Bagus Mantra No 88 A, Bypass Ketewel, Gianyar. Hitchcock is dubbed one of the best and most popular film makers of all time. Born with the name Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock in Leytonstone, London, on August 13, 1899, he started out as a filmmaker in the UK, before moving to the US in 1939. Famous for his thriller movies, Hitchcock produced more than 50 movies during his six-decade career, from 1921 to 1976.

One of his most acclaimed movies is Psycho (1960) about a psychotic murderer, which was based on a novel with a similar title by Robert Bloch. This story was inspired by a serial murder committed by Ed Gein in Wisconsin. Dubbed “The Master of Suspense”, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute in 1979, as well as a number of Academy Awards. “This movie screening is to mark the 2012 drama movie by Sacha Gervasi, which is about behind the scenes of Psycho, and was released last November,” said Juwitta K. Lasut, an employee of Bentara Budaya Bali.

The movies to be screened include an early work from when he was still in the UK, an era that film critics call the British Classics, The Lady Vanishes (1938, 96 minutes), as well as Rebecca (1940, 130 minutes), and Suspicion (1941, 99 minutes), an action thriller. Rebecca, starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine, won an Academy Award for best movie in 1941 and was his 30th movie, but was the first movie he made in the US. Saboteur (1942, 109 minutes) and Lifeboat (1944, 97 minutes) were movies he made during the peak of the World War II. Strangers on a Train (1951, 101 minutes) and Rear Window (1954, 112 minutes), starring L.B. “Jeff” Jefferies (James Stewart), were among his most popular movies.
