As part of its Indonesia Digital School program, which aims to install 100,000 Internet hotspots in schools, PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) expects to provide a total of 5,227 Internet hotspot access points in educational institutions around Bali throughout 2013. At present, there are around 152 universities and schools in Bali that already have 1,366 Wi-fi access points within their establishments.
Educational institutions equipped with Wi-fi include Denpasar-based universities the Udayana, Warmadewa, Mahasaraswati, UNHI and Dwijendra, state high schools SMA 1 and SMA 4 and schools located in Badung, Tabanan, Bangli and Gianyar. “The installation of the Internet network will be free of charge. The free Wi-fi connection needs to be refreshed every hour. Users who purchase a voucher worth Rp 1,000 can use the internet all day, while with a Rp 20,000 voucher, users can subscribe to the hotspot for a month,” said Telkom’s media relation regional communication Jaka Indrawan on Friday.
He assured that the standard Wi-fi provided by Telkom would already have it’s own security filter to block access to improper content, such as pornographic websites. Through Indonesia Digital School, or IndiSchool, Telkom hopes to assist in the improvement of education quality, said Telkom’s director of enterprise and wholesale Muhammad Awaluddin. IndiSchool would help teachers and students access educational content via the Internet. “The program is adjusted according to schools’ needs and most importantly, it’s accessible and cheap,” said Awaluddin, as quoted in the media release provided to the Bali Daily on Friday.
The IndiSchool program will not only be implemented in major cities, but also in remote towns nationwide to reduce the educational gaps between major cities and remote areas. During the first stage of the IndiSchool program, Telkom will provide Internet access at a speed of 1 Mbps. There are currently around 3,000 schools around the archipelago already equipped with IndiSchool’s Internet facilities. “Safety is our No. 1 priority. Business can come later, if the weather gets better.”
