In its continuous efforts to always make positive differences in everything that they do, Surfer Girl partnered with Odyssey Surfing School to host a surfing session with orphans at Kuta Beach on Saturday, Dec. 22. Ten children from the Elisama Orphanage in Denpasar came to Kuta Beach for surfing lessons with an Odyssey surf instructor dressed in a full Santa Claus outfit. Helping with the teaching were Santa’s assistants, Surfer Girl’s own team riders. The six team riders —aged from 10 to 14 years old — were stoked to be able to share their surfing techniques and play along with the kids.
The event was not only about surfing, but was also packed with lots of fun and informative content. To start the day, the kids visited the Balawisata Lifeguards, where the lifeguard on duty, Made Sujana, shared insights on safety when swimming in the sea. Following the visit, the kids then joined in a beach cleanup along the shores of Kuta Beach, then went on to play an environmental game. Conducted by the corporate social responsibility (CSR) team of Surfer Girl, the game was designed to inform and emphasize on the importance of waste segregation, with the kids racing to place each mentioned type of garbage into its appropriate bin.
The kids and all the team riders had a blast during this half-day event, especially when it came to jumping into the waves. Although this was the first-time surfing for most of the kids from the orphanage, they were fearless, with most being able to stand up on a surfboard on the shore breaks of Kuta Beach right after a half-an-hour theory session. Surfer Girl’s head of marketing communications, Nadia Bintoro, also handed over donations in the form of Surfer Girl merchandise to the Elisama Orphanage, saying, “We’re really thankful for the orphanage and Odyssey Surfing School for this wonderful opportunity to share with the community. We’re sure that this won’t be a one-time event, as this is who we are — a fun brand that cares about others and the environment. We are looking forward to hosting more fun-filled, charity events in 2013.”
