This small café located on Jl. Bypass Ngurah Rai in Sanur offers a variety of desserts that can end up as an “addiction”. A display of homemade pies, cakes, cookies, brownies, muffins and cupcakes will tempt you as soon as you enter Ruth, located some 50 meters from the Jl. Danau Tamblingan intersection. Ruth offers small slices of cakes with an average price of Rp 20,000 (US$2.07) each, which is quite expensive for middle-class people in Denpasar, but worth the splurge to get a culinary experience of traditional American desserts.
Traditional round spicy carrot cake with walnuts layered with luscious real cream cheese frosting is worth tasting. The brown cake containing grated carrot is not too sweet and feels a bit grainy. You can also try rainbow cake. It melts in your mouth and makes you feel like you don’t want to lose the last bite. Each type of cake can be bought per slice or whole. Other choices include cheesecake with a rich cream-cheese filling and bursting with succulent blueberries, strawberries or raspberries and the American-style apple pie made with crispy tart apples and laced with pungent cinnamon and a hint of nutmeg.
Ruth’s desserts are largely a product of heirloom recipes handed down through families of European descent that immigrated to the Americas more than a century ago. Most of these recipes, believe it or not, were kept and used by expatriates who worked in isolated areas of the world for multiple generations where the only way to make a dessert was from scratch. In this way, the recipes were preserved from the influence of fast food quick-fix cooking. All of Ruth’s desserts are made with fresh cream, butter, berries, fruit, brown and white sugars, baking flour, natural spices and cold pressed oils.
