Russian national, Alexander Simonov, 30,
was found guilty of smuggling 1 kilogram of hashish on Tuesday at the
Denpasar District Court and was sentenced to 8 years in prison. The
sentence was three years lighter than the 11 years requested by
prosecutor Ketut Sujaya. Both Simonov and the prosecutor accepted the
verdict. “The defendant has been convincingly proven guilty of importing
hashish weighing 915 grams.
He violated Clause 113 of Law No. 35/2009
on narcotics,” said judge Gunawan Tri Budiono when reading out the
verdict. Simonov was also penalized with a Rp 1 billion (US$104,450)
fine or an additional two months behind bars. Simonov was a courier for
an international drug syndicate. He was caught by customs personnel at
Ngurah Rai International Airport, after he landed here on Malaysian
Airlines MH 715 from Kuala Lumpur on April 24. Simonov swallowed the
hashish, which was packed in 88 capsules. Simonov bought the hashish
from India for US$1,500 and planned to distribute it in Bali and
