Lines of plant nurseries and garden
centers along Jl. Hayam Wuruk heading to Jl. Hang Tuah offer the densely
populated Denpasar a tranquil landscape. The fantastic collection of
tropical ornamental plants adds colors and cheerfulness to the
cityscape. Green leafy plants like anthurium, tropical palm trees and
colorful flowering plants such as adenium, hibiscus and frangipani, to
rare species of orchids, are on display in almost every nursery there.
Walking through the area is an eye-pleasing activity. Guests from nearby
hotels can also take advantage of fresh air while jogging or strolling
along the shady street.
I Gede Kanthi, an avid orchid grower and
collector, is happy to share his passion for the plant with any visitor
who comes to his nursery. Meanwhile, I Gede Ambara, the head of the
Denpasar Agriculture, Horticulture and Crops Agency, said that the
mayoralty had designated Jl. Hang Tuah, Jl. Sedap Malam, Jl. Hayam
Wuruk, Jl. Ida Bagus Mantra and Jl. Bypass Ngurah Rai as centers for
tropical gardens and indoor plants. Meanwhile, decorative and cut
flowers are sold along Jl. Sutoyo. Ambara said there were 157 plant
nurseries and 24 shops selling cut flowers in Denpasar. The rapid growth
of tourism and property businesses has had a positive impact on local
flower and plant growers.
Gede Wijaya from Jaya Flora said that new
hotels, villas and housing complexes needed abundant supplies of
tropical plants and flowers for their gardens and rooms. Demand for
unique plants, flowers, herbs and grasses was very high, in line with
the mushrooming property business. “Some hotels and office buildings
rent indoor plants to decorate their interiors,” he said. Visitors can
find cheap plants priced at Rp 5,000 (52 US cents) per pot up to those
costing millions of rupiah per pot. Ambara said that the business for
outdoor and indoor plants was booming. “It is good for farmers as they
can generate more income and also good for the city landscape,” Ambara
added.
