Russian Drug Courier Gets 8 Years Prison in Bali
The Russian national standing trial in
Bali for attempting to smuggle 88 capsules of illegal narcotics
concealed in his gut has finally been sentenced to 8 years in prison in
Bali by the Denpasar District Court. Alexander Simonov, a Russian yoga
instructor, was ruled “guilty as charged” for trying to smuggle drugs
via Bali’s airport on April 24, 2012. In addition to his 8-year
sentence, the Russian received an addition fine of Rp. 1 billion
(US$104,00), a failure of which to pay will add two more months to his
lengthy sentence.
The sentence was 2 years less than the 11
years demanded by prosecutors. According to The Jakarta Globe, Simonov
was branded by the presiding judge as a courier for an international
drug syndicate attempting to bring hashish into Bali. Simonov told the
court he would not appeal the sentence but reportedly became violent and
tried to strike out at a photographer attending the court session.
